Members and friends of ACV have been watching as a stretch of Dowling Park Drive has undergone a dramatic transformation. Where once cinderblock duplexes stood, now stands an entirely new neighborhood of townhome-style apartments called Taylor Commons. This project not only increases occupancy in that area, but also enhances curb appeal at ACV’s center.
Phase I of Taylor Commons was dedicated in November of 2015. That phase consisted of Lawrence House, a two-story apartment building with eight apartments; McGranahan Place, a single-story town home with four apartments; and Cleo’s Meeting House, a community building.
Each Lawrence House apartment features two bedrooms, one and a half baths, an open concept, and a detached parking area. Apartments in McGranahan Place feature two bedrooms, two full baths, an open concept, and an attached garage. Cleo’s Meeting House currently serves as the offices for ACV’s Residency Services, but will eventually be turned over to the neighborhood to be used as a community building.
August 2016, Phase II of Taylor Commons began. When completed it will consist of three more townhomes similar to McGranahan Place, but each building will be comprised of six apartments instead of four, bringing the total number of Taylor Commons apartments to 30.
The first of the three new buildings was completed at the end of February. Already, the residents for all six apartments have moved in and are enjoying their new homes. Of the 18 Phase II apartments, only a few have yet to be reserved.
Verna Simpson is excited to be a new Taylor Commons resident. She moved to the area 20 years ago into a home just outside of Advent Christian Village. At her new home, she’s looking forward to letting ACV’s grounds crew take care of the yardwork and loves the convenient location. The Village Square, with its shops, grocery store, post office and bank, is right across the street — close enough to walk. “Maybe I’ll get more exercise,” Verna chuckles.
The second of the three new six-unit townhomes is coming along steadily. It is scheduled for completion in May. The start of construction for the third building will follow.
