Get Out on the Water This Summer with These Outdoor Activities for Seniors

With summer just around the corner, things are starting to heat up in sunny North Florida. Getting out on the water is a great way for seniors to keep cool while staying active, experiencing new things and creating priceless memories. Whatever your skill level, there are a number of outdoor activities for seniors that allow you to do just that.

According to the CDC, staying active is one of the best things older adults can do for their overall health. Its health experts recommend aiming for two and a half to five hours of moderate aerobic activity every week. Of course, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor to determine how much activity is right for you.

The summer is a great time to get moving, and doing it out on the water can help you beat the heat. Looking to get outside, get active and enjoy the Florida sun this summer? Here are three fun outdoor activities for seniors to enjoy.

Swimming

Whether in the pool, at the lake or at the beach, swimming is a great activity for all ages. It’s one of the best outdoor activities for seniors for a number of reasons. First, swimming is low impact, which means it’s doable for many people with arthritis or injury. In fact, it might even help with joint pain or stiffness. Always speak with your doctor before beginning any new fitness regimen, especially if you have arthritis or another health condition.

Second, swimming is a great way to get your heart rate up without putting too much stress on your body. You can swim laps, take a water aerobics class or even just splash around for fun. Either way, you’re giving your heart a great workout.

In addition to these other great benefits, spending time in the water can boost your mood and help manage stress. Because swimming is so well-suited for older adults, the CDC included it on its list of suggested aerobic activities for seniors.

Kayaking and Canoeing

Another great way to get on the water this summer is in a kayak or canoe. This activity is great for your core, as well as building up strength in your arms and shoulders. While it’s a bit more strenuous than swimming, it’s an outdoor activity that many seniors can safely enjoy.

Simple measures, such as climbing into your kayak in shallow water, can make this pastime more manageable for older adults. Consider taking an instructional class or going with an experienced friend the first time you try it out.

Once you’re out on the water, take advantage of beautiful locations you can explore, such as the historic Suwannee River. And as with any outdoor activity, be sure to stay hydrated and apply plenty of sunscreen. No matter how experienced you are, every time you are on the water, always wear a life jacket or vest.

Fishing

If swimming and canoeing aren’t your cup of tea, there’s still a great way to get out on the water: fishing! When it comes to outdoor activities for seniors, fishing is manageable for almost everyone.

Depending on your comfort and activity level, you can fish on a boat, on a dock or from the comfort of a chair on the shore. Planning ahead is essential for enjoying a quiet day of fishing. You can bring a friend for company or simply enjoy the peace of the water.

As a note, always be sure to obtain the proper licenses before fishing. Florida residents may need to obtain a Florida Recreational Fishing License before enjoying this outdoor activity.
