What is Emotional Wellness?

Do you find yourself feeling run down, anxious, tired or irritable often? These are common feelings that everyone experiences at one point or another. But did you know that how you’re feeling each day can affect your everyday life? If you don’t practice emotional wellness, you may find yourself unable to properly control your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Emotional wellness inspires self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the development of inner strength. It focuses on being attentive to both the positive and negative feelings you encounter and being able to understand how to handle them. Emotional wellness also includes developing the ability to learn and grow from all of your experiences and properly make decisions.
Of course, maintaining your emotional wellness can be tricky, especially if you struggle with stress or self-deprecating thoughts or feelings, like we’re all prone to from time to time. Fortunately, there are easy ways to help you improve your emotional wellness, so you can enjoy life to the fullest.

Why is Emotional Wellness Important?

Emotional wellness is important to your overall health. When you’re emotionally healthy, you will be more in control of your thoughts and be able to cope better with the many challenges of life. When you truly experience emotional wellness, you will have the power to express yourself and your feelings without any hesitation and you will be capable of forming supportive and meaningful relationships with others.

5 Ways to Practice Emotional Wellness

Here are just five ways you can practice emotional wellness and improve your overall health and wellbeing.

  1. Get Enough Sleep. Getting adequate amounts of sleep helps to maintain energy and increase productivity. When you get between 6-8 hours of sleep a night, you’re actively boosting your mood, helping your body ward off illness and improving your emotional wellness.
  2. Maintaining Spiritual Support. Spiritual fellowship is very important to your emotional wellness. There is nothing like a partnership of brothers and sisters in Christ. Connect with your neighbors or make a consistent communication schedule with friends and family. It’s important that you have a supportive, trustworthy group of people in your life who are there for you and who will listen to you when you need them.
  3. Develop a New Passion or Hobby. There are so many benefits to developing a new hobby for yourself. Hobbies offer you a new challenge, can unite you with others that have similar interests, provide you an outlet for stress and help you improve your emotional wellness.
  4. Maintain a Positive Attitude. It’s normal to experience a bad mood from time to time, but if you constantly have a negative outlook on things, it will continuously eat away at your internal happiness. Try to take notice how often you think or say negative things and try to limit the amount of negative thoughts and speech you use by turning to Christ during an unsettling time.
  5. Take Part in Moderate Exercise. Any form of moderate exercise has a multitude of benefits. Whether it’s swimming, walking, dancing or taking a fitness class, you’re sure to benefit both physically and emotionally from incorporating exercise into your daily routine.
