Seniors and Flu Prevention

Flu season is in full swing yet again. While a bout with the flu virus is rough for everyone, seniors have a higher risk of contacting the flu and experience more severe symptoms as the virus takes its course. The flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness, and in some cases can even be fatal.

The good news is that there are several things you can do to prevent catching the flu and spreading the virus to others. Keep reading to learn more about the flu vaccine and tips for flu prevention this season.

Flu Shots for Seniors

Did you know there’s a flu shot especially recommended for seniors? As we age, our immune systems can become weaker, making the regular flu vaccine less likely to be effective. To help you fend off the flu this year, there is a high dose flu shot available that has more antigens and antibodies. If you’re interested in this option, ask your doctor for more information.

Making the flu vaccine a priority for yourself each year is the best way to protect yourself from the influenza virus. Vaccines may be updated from one season to the next, because flu viruses are constantly changing. According to the Centers for Disease Control, seniors who receive flu shots are 57% less likely to be hospitalized due to the virus and its complications.

After vaccination, it takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop and provide protection against infection. That’s why it’s always best to get vaccinated before flu season starts in October. But, don’t worry if you haven’t received your flu shot yet because it’s not too late! Contact your doctor’s office today to schedule your vaccination as soon as possible.

6 Simple Flu Prevention Tips

There are several healthy hygiene habits that you can develop and practice each day to minimize your exposure to the flu. Even following just a few of these suggestions could help you avoid germs and keep yourself healthy.

  1. Wash your hands often, using soap and warm water. Aim for at least 20 seconds of hand washing to get rid of germs.
  2. Try your best to keep your hands away from your face and mouth.
  3. Sanitize everything you touch frequently, such as your phone, electronics, remote control, keys, steering wheel, etc.
  4. Stay hydrated and increase your vitamin C intake during flu season. Check with your doctor first before adding additional supplements to your diet.
  5. If possible, try to avoid large crowds, especially at airports.
  6. Additionally, stay away from anyone who is showing symptoms of illness or has recently been sick.
